It looks like former Villa manager Paul Lambert is red hot favourite in the short list to be the next Wolves boss and in my opinion they could do a lot worse.
I had my ups and downs and arguments with Paul while he was at Villa Park but always found him to be a proper football man. After he was sacked by Villa subsequent events changed my thinking about him and other managers who worked under Randy Lerner and Tom Fox.
In my opinion it seems obvious that he did not get the players he wanted but said yes to players put before him by the recruitment team. They of course worked under parameters set by Fox and Lerner. I remember him clearly being unhappy about the amount of money spent and the furore around the signing of Barcelona reserve Adama Traore. He saw potential in him but understandably wanted experienced Premier League players to help him win games.
Whoever Wolves go for it has to be the right man as this is a massive appointment for the club-they cannot afford to get it wrong again. The appointment of Walter Zenga was a disaster waiting to happen but what is more frustrating is it has put the club back 3 months in their fight for promotion. I understand that Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell who was part of the team that chose Kenny Jackett was not part of the panel that appointed Zenga. However thankfully he is a member of the panel that will choose the new manager.
A brilliant goalkeeper for Inter Milan and Italy but his managerial/coaching record since 2006 is appalling with Wolves being his 11th club. Before that he did win two League titles with Steaua Bucharest and Red Star Belgrade although I am not being unfair when I say that was not difficult at that time.
The man needs to have championship experience. It is not a league you can just bring in a manager from abroad and expect him to settle and fit in right away and get a team as big as Wolves in the race for promotion.
